Orphaned, Sarah moves to the British country-side to live with her anti-Semitic cousins, Lord and Lady Lady. She finds no comfort in her new luxurious surroundings as she is reviled during Lord Lady's salons for her Jewish heritage. She is made to sleep in a garret where she writes by lamplight, confiding in her diary and dreaming of a mysterious paige-boy named Bort.
